At VistaTek, we believe the future of American manufacturing starts with the next generation. That’s why we were proud to host a class of high school students for Manufacturing Day, a national initiative designed to inspire young minds and highlight the importance of manufacturing in the United States.
Breaking Down Barriers to Manufacturing Careers
For many students, the idea of a career in manufacturing may feel distant or unfamiliar. By opening our doors, we offered them a firsthand look at the exciting, high-tech, and impactful opportunities available in this industry. This experience helps break down misconceptions; manufacturing is no longer dark, dirty, or outdated. Instead, it’s a dynamic field where science, technology, and creativity meet to shape the world around us.
Hands-On Learning: From Injection Molding to Scientific Molding
During their visit, students had the opportunity to see both injection molding and scientific molding in action; core processes that allow us to make high-quality parts with precision and efficiency. They gained insight into how programming, problem-solving, and technical knowledge come together to create products that touch everyday life, from medical devices to consumer goods.
At the end of the tour, each student received a sleeve of our SelfEco Stadium Cups along with a Modern Sprout Hydroponic Growing Jar, generously donated by the Modern Sprout team.
We actually manufacture a component that goes into these growing jars- so it was extra neat for the students to see the full process, from production to final product!
A huge thank-you to the Modern Sprout team for the generous (and fun!) donation. 🌱

The Role of Automation and Inspection
Students will also learn how today’s manufacturers rely on advanced programming to run automated systems and ensure quality inspections. This isn’t just about pushing buttons... it’s about understanding how to program machines, analyze data, and continuously improve processes. These skills are in high demand and prepare young people for rewarding, future-proof careers.
Exploring Secondary Operations
Beyond molding, our guests will witness secondary operations that bring added value to manufactured parts, including:
-Pad printing for custom graphics and labeling
-Light assembly that integrates components into complete products
-Heat staking for strong and precise joining of plastics
-Sonic welding that uses sound waves to create permanent bonds
These processes demonstrate the variety and complexity of skills needed in modern manufacturing, and the potential pathways for students interested in engineering, design, or hands-on craftsmanship.
Building the Workforce of Tomorrow
As America faces a growing skills gap in manufacturing, it’s vital that we inspire young people to consider careers in this field. By showcasing advanced technologies and real-world applications, Manufacturing Day at VistaTek helps students see themselves in these roles. They’ll discover that manufacturing offers not only good-paying jobs but also the chance to innovate, create, and make a difference.
Why It Matters for the U.S.
Manufacturing is the backbone of our economy and a driver of innovation. By investing in young people today, we ensure that the U.S. remains competitive on the global stage tomorrow. Events like Manufacturing Day are about more than one visit; they’re about sparking curiosity, building confidence, and opening doors to opportunities that will strengthen our workforce and our nation’s future.
Kind Words from White Bear Lake Career and Technical Education Teacher
“The field trip provided students with crucial, direct insight into a leading manufacturing industry- illustrating the real-world applications of their classroom learning. Students gained a comprehensive understanding of:
• All aspects of the industry, from design and material selection to final production processes.
• The growing issue of microplastic hazards and their environmental impact.
• The increasing value and importance of developing environmentally friendly, compostable products within the plastics manufacturing sector.VistaTek’s willingness to open their doors for tours is invaluable, providing students with firsthand knowledge that can help them shape their future career paths in engineering and manufacturing.”
- Delroy Nyren, White Bear Lake CTE Teacher
Additionally, our students shared a few thoughts about what they enjoyed learning on the shop floor:
“I learned about all of the different products that can make bio-plastic.”
“I liked being around a live workspace at this level.”
“I liked hearing about sustainable practices and biodegradable plastics.”
